Overview

Madagascar possesses several iron ore deposits, though no domestic transformation capability.  As such, the vast majority of the country’s iron and steel needs are supplied through imports.  This sector currently presents opportunities for American iron and steel exporters seeking to supply the country’s significant import needs.

Iron and Steel Market Malagasy

Products covered are within HTS Chapter 72 “Iron and Steel Products” (such as stainless steel, bars, rods, wire of alloy steel) and HTS Chapter 73 “Articles of Iron or Steel” (such as wires, ropes, cables, tubes and pipes).

Opportunities

Given Madagascar’s total imports in this sector of USD 142 million in 2014 (CIF) and considering the current low U.S. market share, U.S. exporters can increase their sales in this sector through the establishment of a sales agent or by negotiating with a well-known importer or distributor.  Turkey, India, China, and South Africa are currently the top exporters in this sector.
