  • Using a local agent/distributor is recommended: Although the use of an agent or distributor is not required, it is highly recommended.  A local agent/representative can assist in navigating the sometimes complex nature of import procedures and local business customs.  Agents or distributors can also help position products and brands in the market through local advertising and promotion and can provide effective and responsive after sales service.  The Bahamas does not have competition policy or anti-trust legislation, using a well-established agent or distributor can assist in generating sales that might otherwise not materialize without their long-standing contacts in the business community.

  • Terms of Arrangement are negotiated: Arrangements are agreed privately and the engagement of a local attorney is recommended.  Generally, local distributors purchase directly from manufacturers or U.S. based wholesalers and resell in The Bahamas.  Given the compact size of the market, most local distributors will request exclusive distribution rights and expect financial/technical support for tailored marketing.

  • Choosing the right agent/distributor is key: A listing of the more established agents and distributors is available from the Political-Economic- Section of the U.S. Embassy.  The Embassy, with support from the Department of Commerce, can help U.S. exporters find agents and distributors through the following fee-based services:

    • International Partner Search (IPS):  This service helps U.S. companies find local partners and licensees abroad.  The IPS provides a report on up to five agents, distributors, manufacturer’s representatives, or other strategic partners who have expressed an interest in the company’s products or services.

    • Gold Key Services (GKS): This service consists of a survey of potential representatives or customers based on the client’s requirements, as well as 4-6 pre-arranged appointments per day with potential prospects.  It also includes a welcome kit, hotel reservations, and escort to selected appointments by the Embassy’s Commercial Specialist.
