While Rwandans have traditionally looked to Africa, Europe and Dubai for the bulk of their trade, there is a growing demand for U.S. products. An increasing number of Rwandans place value in quality durable goods from the U.S. rather than less expensive products from the UAE and China. Construction equipment, telecommunications equipment and used clothing make up the majority of Rwanda's imports from the U.S.
There have also been several large individual sales from U.S. companies over the past few years. Harris Corp recently sold USD 16 million in radio transmission equipment to the Government of Rwanda and Lucent Technologies completed a USD 25 million project to provide a turnkey wireless air loop system. Rwanda is a net importer of food and has a very small manufacturing base, creating opportunities for investment.
