Featured Market: Thailand

The Thai government has established an education "Superboard" to overhaul the system and improve Thai education in many aspects by formulating a master plan for education reform from 2015 - 2020.  One area of improvement is to improve its educational system in order increase its competitiveness in human resource.  Since the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) was effective in 2015, English is likely to be a key component of facilitating transnational investment and movement of labor within the AEC. Thailand still lags far behind major ASEAN countries in English proficiency.  Hence, the number of English language schools and language training centers is growing in order to meet this demand for more education options.

Why Thailand?

The demand to study abroad during an undergraduate degree is growing continually.  Every year, there are newly 3-5 international high schools registered and growing numbers of bilingual schools.  Both private and public high schools offer English Program (EP) and there are over 1,200 international programs to attract Thais and foreign university students.

The United States is still the number one destination for Thais to study abroad because of the reputation of strong academic programs.  It is expected that the number of Thai students in the United States will increase in the next few years as the economy improves.

Summary

  • The Ministry of Education has issued a number of tasks in developing Thailand into an international education hub in the ASEAN region.
  • Student Exchange and summer programs are popular among youth and high school students as a pathway to learning Western culture and English language with native speakers.
  • The number of students who study in community colleges is growing over years.  In the 2014/2015, the number of visa issued for applying in Associated Degree has significantly increased by 67 percent.
  • ESL and English intensive programs become one of factors that students will consider to enroll in the university, apart from tuition fee, and admission requirements.
  • The most popular academic programs are business administration, computer information, engineering, and mass communication.
  • Thai students are interested in studying abroad in order to increase their competency and having a better career path.
  • Scholarship programs and OTP (Optional Practical Training) opportunities play an important part in student recruitment.
  • Over 80% of students who study abroad are self-funding.
  • The top five U.S. States that host international students are California, New York, Texas, Massachusetts and Illinois.

There is strong competition on student recruitment with a variety of academic programs and minimum enrollment requirements offered by other English-speaking destinations such as the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
