Summary

The Czech Republic ranks among the world’s top ten countries in terms of the number of published non-periodical titles per 10,000 inhabitants. Like many countries, the Czech Republic is facing a decline in printed publications due to the availability of other media and activities. In 2008, Czech publishers and booksellers had to face rising price of books due to the increase of value-added-tax on books from 5 to 9 percent. Recent worldwide economic crisis have also negative influence on the book sales. Despite these trends, book reading remains a key part of the country’s cultural life.
