Only a small percentage of exports to India require a license, but U.S. companies should be aware that dual-use (civilian-military) and defense products and technologies require a license for export.
Dual-use items are regulated by the Department of Commerce, Bureau of Industry and Security. U.S. exporters can also consult the Bureau of Industry and Security for information on trade in high technology sectors with India, including the new Validated End-User (VEU) program.
Defense products are governed by the Department of State, Directorate of Defense Trade Controls.
In addition, all U.S. companies are required to comply with the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act making it unlawful to bribe foreign government officials to obtain or retain business.
Additional restrictions may apply on doing business with certain individuals or organizations overseas. For information on these restrictions, U.S. exporters can consult the Department of Treasury, Office of Foreign Assets Control.
